Harana in Filipino means serenade. In the Philippines this serenade was used mainly for ‘panliligaw’ or courtship, singing outside the window, to declare one’s love. It’s a lost art. Now Harana has evolved to other meanings like dedicating songs to a lost love, or songs promising forever love. On May 20, 2023 Pinoy Jam Paris will present Harana 2, a musical event and an organizational evolution of the PJP event “Harana” which is now (very excitingly) developing into a budding tradition within the Filipino music community in France.
Harana started last year 2022. Before that PJP always had the Sunday Jam concerts in bars and the Fete De La Musique (FDLM) concerts. PJP felt that these types of concerts reduced Pinoy music to pop and band performance. With the growing membership of PJP, we have various talents to tap and who can showcase the lesser promoted genres of Pinoy music, classical and jazz.
Harana became the platform to feature non-band type of Pinoy music and to provide an opportunity for members to perform in a more formal setting.
Like the other PJP mini shows, the objective is to raise funds for the Fete De La Musique (FDLM) project and at the same time present Filipino music so even non-Filipinos can discover something about our culture.
Filipino music has a rich and diverse history, dating back to the early ethnic period. In celebration of the Philippine National Heritage Month, Pinoy Jam Paris (PJP) wishes to invite everyone to another serenade concert, Harana 2: Musika NOON at NGAYON (Filipino music then and now).
This show will feature the evolution of Filipino music from the tribal period, the Spanish and American colonization era, up to the rise of the modern Original Pilipino Music (OPM).
Whether you come to discover the diversity of Filipino music or to reminisce of life in the Philippines, you’ll surely be entertained by our artists on Saturday, 20 May 2023 (19h30) at the American Church in Paris (ACP).
Proceeds of this fundraising concert will benefit the ACP’s Generosity Campaign and PJP’s Fête de la Musique project.
